“CNN analysis: Some college athletes play like adults, read like 5th- graders.”

Mary Willingham was sitting in her office one day and a basketball player at the University of North Carolina walked in and asked for help on homework. The athlete could not read or right.
CNN went to twenty- one schools to seek evidence about college athletes. They found that public university’s around the country where many students in the basketball and football programs could only read up to an eighth grade reading level.

This relates to fate. It relates to fate because the athletes figured if they knew all about the sport that they were playing then all the knowledge would come to them. With them not knowing that they have to learn to read and write to be successful in life and in their career.

I feel that it is wrong for the news to put the athlete's business out in the open. That is wrong because they already know that they can’t read or write so for the news to put it out in the open could possibly lead to suicide. On the other hand it is a good thing because athletes are thinking if they know all about the game then the knowledge from school will come by itself. I don’t believe that they should of been brought up that way.

The author said that CNN found that “public universities across the country where many students in the basketball and football programs could read only up to an eighth-grade level.” That explains that athletes who are in the basketball and football programs did not really care about school when they should have been worried about it. Now the athletes has to live with the consequences of their choices.

Evidence:
“As a graduate student at UNC-Greensboro, Willingham researched the reading levels of 183 UNC-Chapel Hill athletes who played football or basketball from 2004 to 2012. She found that 60% read between fourth- and eighth-grade levels. Between 8% and 10% read below a third-grade level.”

“In 2012, the University of Louisville earned a profit of $26.9 million from its men's basketball program, according to figures that schools have to file with the Department of Education and were analyzed by CNNMoney. That's about 60% more than the $16.9 million profit at the University of North Carolina, whose men's hoops team had the second-largest profit.”

“Judge Rules Rich Kid’s Rich Kid-ness Makes Him Not Liable for Deadly Drunk Driving Accident.”

Gray, Madison. The Affluenza Defense: Judge Rules Rich Kid-ness Makes Him Not Liable for Deadly Drunk Driving Accident. Time News Feed. 12 Dec. 2013. Web. 9 Jan. 2014. <http://newsfeed.time.com/2013/12/12/the-affluenza-defense-judge-rules-rich-kids-rich-kid-ness-makes-him-not-liable-for-deadly-drunk-driving-accident/>

On the night of June 15, 2013 Tex a sixteen year old rich kid killed four incident people in a drunk driving accident. It all started when Tex and his friends went to wal-mart and stole beer. They jumped in a pickup truck and smashed into a women and killed her on a Burleson, Texas road. The court said that his alcohol limit was three times the legal limit. Tex plead guilty to four counts of manslaughter by intoxication  and two counts of assault by intoxication causing bodily injuries. In the state of Texas for a crime like this you can be fined up to $10,000 and between two and twenty years in prison. But instead Tex got ten years probation and no jail time. According to a statement from the Tarrant County District Attorney if he slips up he will spend ten years in prison. Tex’s lawyer said that he suffers from affluenza a term that means his wealthy parents let him get away with anything. That is what saved him from a twenty year sentence.
This relates to “The Sniper” story that we read in class. The only thing is that the sniper killed his brother because he was in the war and Tex killed people by being dumb and stealing from wal-mart. This caused him to kill incident people and get away with it.

I feel that it was really wrong that Tex did not go to jail. I feel this way because if it was anyone else they would have gotten the maximum sentence. I don’t think it matters if he is rich or not just as long as he knows right from wrong then he should be punished for his crimes. This effect does not really effect me but it does teach me a lesson that lesson is that if you are  rich then you get away with anything.

The central idea of the passage is about a sixteen year old rich kid Tex. It explains that he killed four people and he injured two of his friends. It also explains why he did not get any jail time.
Evidence:
“He pleaded guilty to four counts of manslaughter by intoxication and two counts of assault by intoxication causing bodily injury. Two teens in the bed of the truck were seriously  injured, and one cannot move or talk.”

“Texas sentencing guidelines for crimes like this call for fines of up to $10,000 and between 2 and 20 years in the state penitentiary. But instead Couch got 10 years of probation and zero time. If he slips up he could go to jail for 10 years, according to a statement from the Tarrant County District Attorney”

B- Weekly Current Event #5

The story is mainley about the new S3tr pronouned as Streeter. This is a one person vehilcle. According to Holloway “The current model uses a standard electric bicycle kit from the Golden moter which grands a range of 15km (9.3 miles) from one charge.”

I think this would be a great way to save gas. I also think that it is a way of getting out of giving someone a ride. This does not really effect me yet because I don’t drive. Overall I think this is a great in invention . That is how I feel about the S3tr.

I think that this impacts the world in a good way and in a bad way. The good way is that it folds up so that you can store it under your desk at work which is a good thing because you don’t have to worry about anyone stealing it. A bad thing is that it is only for one person so if you have kids I would not recommand that you get it.  Another good thing is that it does not take gas you just have to charge the battery. So as you can see the good really does out weight the bad.

Bi-Weekly Current Event #4

The article is mainly about Apple planning on making 4.7 and 5.5 inch downward curved screens. According to Prakash “The new phone would likely be released in the third quarter of next year.” The curved glass screen has became a smartphone trend for all the major companies.

I feel that the new curved screens are a good idea but I also think that it is really useless. I think that it is a good idea because who wouldn’t want a screen that is curved to show all of there friends. I also think that it is useless because I really don’t care about the way my screen is shaped on my phone because as long as I got a good phone and my screen is not scratched up I am fine. The curved screen does not really affect me at all. That is how I feel about the new curved screen.

I think that it impacts the world in two different ways. The first way is the people who want to look cool actually need the new curved screen to show how good they are. Also sometimes if you are part of a major business then they sometime require you to have the latest phone. The other way that it can impact the world is some people are very clumsy and them having a curved screen is an accident waiting to happen. That is how I feel the new curved screen will impact the world.

Bi-Weekly Current Event #3

My topic is Windows 8 Making a change but with problem

The title of this article is : Windows 8.1: What a difference a year makes

This article was about Windows 8 making an upgrade to all its devices but with three problems. The three problems are the touch screen, the new and the old software, and did nothing to teach people how to use it. With the touch screen problem it would not let you see the setting without going through the desktop control panel. The new and old software problem is that it could not have both it is one or the other. Lastly not teaching people how to use it problem is Windows 8 introduced a lot of new things but did not tell people how to use them at all.

I think that the new Windows 8 upgrade is not a good idea. I think so because who what’s to have something that they have no idea how it works. I feel that it is unfair to have people waste their money on something that they can’t work. It affects me a lot because I use the Window’s 8 products and I would hate for my daddy to buy me the new upgrade and I don’t have a clue how to use it. It also impacts me because I Like to record songs and I would not know how to upload them or work them.

It impacts the world because people want  to learn and be on top of all the new technology. So now they can’t if the new Window’s 8 is not wanting to teach people how to use them at all.  According to Peter Bright “Windows 8 was far from perfect” ( Windows 8.1: What a difference a year makes). So if it is not what it is supposed to be then people will not want to buy it and then Window’s sale percent will drop. That is how I feel it is going to impact the world.

Blog Post #3

Dear, Readers

Some new terms that we have learned this week is a stereotype which means a popular belief about a group of people based on assumptions that are often false. An online predator is commonly someone who uses the internet to develop inappropriate relationships with kids or teens. Manipulate is trying to influence someone to do something they might not otherwise do, for one’s benefit.

Some web 2.0 tools that we learned about is make beliefs comix, goanimate, animoto, and chogger.  Make beliefs comix is not a good thing to use I don’t think so because you can’t save your work. Goanimate I really like using it because I used it in a project and I got an 85 on it. On goanimate you can save your work and add your own pictures. It is basicly like a comic site. Animoto is a website where you can make free 30 second video’s I also like this one because I did a project with it an make an 95 on it. On chogger you can draw your own characters and make a comic with them. All of these tools are comic tools and very fun to use when you play with them I bet that you would like them.  I don’t believe that these tools have any negative aspects.

The digital literacy components that we learned about is the positive and negative interactions with strangers online, some stereotypes that people believe are true, people being manipulative, and how to avoid sexting. This information affect me a lot because now I know what to do and what not to do online. I also know what stereotypes are and to not believe most of them because if you focus on a pacific stereotype then you will think that it is ok to do whatever with who ever as long as you are the same age.

Overall my week has been good and bad it was bad because of my grades that I got on my report card. I had a good week because I got to see all of my friends and also my dad understood my grades and we are working to better them before the next report card or progress report.

Bi-Weekly current event #2

The topic of the article the article is a new way to keep your gun locked away in a gun box that requires a RFID- equipped bracelet (or ring), via a fingerprint scan, or a combination of the two.

The title of the article is Fingerprint sensors and GPS tracking keep your firearms safe inside the Gun Box.

I got the article from Gizmag.

Fincher, Jonathan. “Fingerprint sensors and GPS tracking keep your firearms safe inside the Gun Box.” Gizmag. 27 Sept. 2013. Web. 27 Sept. 2013.

According to Jonathan Fincher “the gun box does not stick out in a home” (Fincher). The gun box can be used by several people with different passwords. It also will not be damaged in a fire or an accident. One more thing is that if the gun box has been moved or tampered with the owner will get a text alert and some can get the exact location of where the gun box is.

I think the gun box is a good idea. I feel this way because lots of people’s gun’s get stolen everyday. This does not really affect be as much because I don’t own a gun. When I get older and possibly own a gun I think the gun box would be an good idea. That is how I feel about the gun box.

I believe that this impacted the world by making a safer place for gun owners to out there guns. It also impacted the world by making it a lot harder for thieves to steal someone’s gun. I believe that most old people with guns would most likely buy the gun box because they are usually the one’s who get robbed for their weapons. Another thing that I think is that is that if someone does get away with someone’s gun box then they will get caught in less than 24 hours. That is how I think the gun box will impact the world.
